TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called for the resignation of Pete Hoekstra, the US ambassador to the Netherlands, who told a reporter it was “fake news” that he said there are Muslim “no-go zones” in that country and then lied about making the fake news charge when presented with video evidence of his anti-Muslim comments.

Hoekstra, was appointed to his new position on December 11.

A video clip posted on Twitter shows Hoekstra saying: “The Islamic movement has now gotten to a point where they have put Europe into chaos. Chaos in the Netherlands, there are cars being burnt, there are politicians that are being burnt. . .and yes there are no-go zones in the Netherlands.”

When the reporter challenged him about calling this “fake news,” Hoekstra denied he had used the phrase, despite being recorded saying it a few seconds before.

“Someone whose word cannot be trusted, and who lies so shamelessly, can only harm our nation’s image and interests abroad,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. “Ambassador Hoekstra should resign and be replaced by someone who will better represent American values in a foreign setting.”
