STOCKHOLM (IQNA) – The leader of a far-right party in Sweden has called for a ban on the construction of new mosques and the demolition of existing ones, months after Sweden became a hub of anti-Islam rhetoric as it allowed the Quran desecration at multiple events.

Jimmie Akesson, the leader of the Sweden Democrats, said that migrants should not have the right to build new mosques.

He made the remarks on Saturday at an event in the southeastern city of Vasteras.

Akesson, who supports Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's coalition government, said he was disturbed by the recent pro-Palestinian protests. He said that the protests were originating from the mosques, claiming that they posed a threat to the country.

"In the long term, we should start seizing and demolishing mosques where anti-democratic, anti-Swedish, homophobic, and anti-Semitic propaganda is generating from," he said.

The Sweden Democrats, a party with Nazi roots, became the second-largest party in parliament after the general elections last year. The party has a history of Islamophobic and xenophobic rhetoric and policies.

The remarks come as Sweden has been strongly criticized by Muslim states and organizations in the past months for allowing anti-Islam extremists misuse the so-called freedom of expression rules in the European country to desecrate the Holy Quran.
