Quran desecration

The 37-year-old suspect was caught after a woman reported seeing him throwing the sacred texts from his motorcycle along Jalan Besar Palong, Bernama reported on Sunday.

According to Superintendent Hoo Chang Hook, the district police chief, two more reports were lodged about the discovery of the Quran fragments on the same road.

"The suspect was arrested with a copy of the Quran and admitted to his involvement in the incident," he said in a statement today.

Hoo added that the suspect was a drug user who tested positive for methamphetamine. He also had a criminal record for two drug-related offences and one mischief offence under the Penal Code.

The police will seek a remand order for the suspect in court tomorrow, and the case will be probed under the Penal Code sections for causing religious disharmony and mischief.
