Martyred Leader’s Funeral Reflects Iranians’ Unity: British Journalist
Speaking to Press TV after attending the funeral events in Tehran, Shaikh said she was struck by the massive turnout of mourners and the powerful emotions expressed by participants.
"I was overwhelmed by the number of people," she said, adding that the crowds reflected both profound sadness and anger over the assassination of the martyred leader. She noted that women, children, and entire families had gathered to pay their respects, describing the public support as immense.
Shaikh said that, had she ever met the late Ayatollah Khamenei, she would have asked him how he developed the principles, character, and sense of responsibility that, in her view, inspired millions of Iranians.
She also challenged what she described as Western narratives about Iranian society, arguing that her experience in Iran differed significantly from common portrayals abroad.
"I have met the women in Iran. They are incredibly intelligent and highly educated," she said, encouraging people to visit the country and experience Iranian culture and society firsthand.
According to Shaikh, the martyred leader played a broader role than that of a political or religious figure. She described him as a source of wisdom who emphasized values such as family, education, work, and faith, while also contributing to Iran's development in the modern era.
She further said that Ayatollah Khamenei had become an important symbol of global "resistance" movement, arguing that he advocated justice and support for oppressed peoples, particularly the Palestinian cause.
Shaikh concluded that the martyred leader had left behind a lasting legacy that, in her view, would continue to inspire future generations.
