TEHRAN (IQNA) – Representative of the host country bagged the top prize in the recitation category of Malaysia’s 58th international Quran competition.

According to IQNA dispatches, winners were announced and awarded at the closing ceremony on Saturday night.

In the category of recitation in men’s section, the Qari from the host country won the top rank and representatives of Brunei, Indonesia, Iran and the Philippines respectively came second to fifth.

Memorizers from Egypt, Malaysia, and the US finished first to third in memorization in the men’s section.

In the women’s section of the contest, the Malaysian, Bruneian, and Moroccan reciters and Egyptian, Malaysian and Lebanese memorizers were announced as the winners.

Selection of Iran’s Seyed Mostafa Hosseini by the panel of judges as the fourth-rank winner came as a surprise since he had been posed as a favorite to be the top winner due to his outstanding performance.

The 16-strong panel of judges comprised Quran experts from Lebanon, Qatar, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Indonesia, Egypt, Thailand and Malaysia.

The contest, officially named "International Al Quran Recital and Memorisation Assembly”, was held in Malaysia’s capital city of Kuala Lumpur Monday through Saturday.

Some 120 Quran reciters and memorizers from 69 countries took part in the competition.
