The suspension was decreed by Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah following a special meeting on Monday between the state Mufti’s office, Selangor Islamic Religious Council and Selangor Islamic Religious Department.
Sultan Sharafuddin’s private secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, said the ruler of Selangor had decreed that no activities were to be held at mosques and surau until May 31.
He said the activities included Friday prayers, group prayers, talks and lectures.
He said Sultan Sharafuddin made the decision to protect all Selangorians from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“However, if the pandemic is contained earlier, a fresh order will be issued,” Mohamad Munir said in a statement, the Star reported.
He said the main Friday prayers must be replaced with Zohor prayers at home, adding that the five-time daily prayers and Tarawih prayers during Ramadan must also be held at home.
“All citizens must be more committed in the effort to overcome the pandemic by staying at home, ensuring personal cleanliness as well as observing social distancing,” he added.
