IQNA – Swedish officials persist in granting contentious permits for public protests that desecrate the Quran with one such protest planned for Friday ahead of a song contest in Malmo.

Swedish police announced on Thursday they granted permission to demonstrators planning to burn a copy of the Holy Quran in Malmo before the start of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

Additionally, the police have received another application for a similar gathering on Saturday, according to information provided to Swedish news agency TT.

Meanwhile, organizers of the Eurovision contest announced that they will remove any Palestinian flags and pro-Palestinian symbols at the show next week.

Pro-Palestinian groups are expected to stage large protests in Malmo to raise awareness of their cause and protest the participation of Israel in the song competition amid the regime’s military onslaught on Gaza, where more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the past seven months.

The Quran desecration permits come as Sweden has been widely condemned by Muslim states and organizations for allowing such acts to happen under the guise of freedom of speech.

Last Friday, a woman who claimed to be a Christian, burned a copy of the Holy Quran under the police protection at Skarholmen area in the capital’s suburbs.

Sweden announced last year that it was considering legal measures that would enable police to deny demonstration permits on the grounds of national security, however, no practical step has been taken by the officials so far.

This is while Denmark enacted legislation last December criminalizing the public burning of Quran copies.
