Late Egyptian Qari Who Said Reciting Quran Was Mission of His Life
He recalled in one of his interviews with the Egyptian Quran Radio that the Holy Quran had been in his blood since childhood.
Today, June 23, is the anniversary of the death of Sheikh Shuaisha, nicknamed the “Nightingale of the State of Quran” in Egypt.
He was the head of the country’s Quran reciters’ union and the first Egyptian qari to recite the Holy Quran in Al-Aqsa Mosque in al-Quds.
On this occasion, the Egyptian National Media Association website published a rare and exclusive interview from the treasures of Egyptian Radio, conducted by Omar Batishah, with Sheikh Shuaisha in 1984.
At the beginning of the interview, Master Shuaisha stated, “I joined the Egyptian Radio in 1939, after Sheikh Muhammad Rifa’t and before Sheikh Mustafa Ismail.”
He added, “At that time, the radio was newly established and I had one tape, number 9, while they only had 10 tapes (Quranic cassettes).
“I would arrive at the radio before the noon prayer and stay there until my recitation, which was before the Isha call to prayer.”

He added, “At that time, there were no recording systems like now; the recitations were broadcast live. So, I would spend the whole day inside the radio building.”
Shuaisha continued, “The Holy Quran has been in my blood since childhood, and I would open some gatherings by reciting verses from the Quran. A number of my close friends advised my father to enroll me in Quran memorization circles.
“When I was 9 years old, my father passed away, but I continued on my path with the Book of God until recitation became the mission of my life.”
Shuaisha was born on August 22, 1922 in Kafr al-Sheikh, Egypt, and memorized the Quran at the age of 10. This Egyptian reciter passed away on June 23, 2011.
