TEHRAN (IQNA) – Luqman was a famous figure living at the time of Prophet David (AS). He was a Hakim (wise man) and according to some historical accounts a messenger of God.

Surah Luqman

The Quran, in Surah Luqman, refers to some of his pieces of advice to his son.

Surah Luqman is the 31st Surah of the Quran. It has 34 verses and is in the 21st Juz of the Holy Book. It is the 57th chapter of the Quran revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

The name of the Surah is Luqman as it mentions the name of the wise man twice. It is the only chapter of the Quran talking about him.

There are different views about where he was born and how long he lived. But he is known to have been a true believer, a truthful person, and one who helped people resolve their differences.

In this Surah, Luqman advises his son about the importance of being a monotheist, respecting and obeying one’s parents, saying prayers, promoting virtue and preventing vice, having patience, being humble, avoiding arrogance, and speaking discreetly.

This chapter divides humans in to two groups: the believers and good doers are the first group, while the second are the deviated and arrogant. In some verses it described their characteristics and signs and where they will end in this world and the next.

The Surah also talks about signs of Tawheed (monotheism), the greatness of God, and reasons that prove the existence of God.

A section of Surah Luqman described some aspects of the Day of Judgment and how man in this transient world is neglectful of what will come in the hereafter.

In the last part of the Surah, five issues are mentioned that only God knows: When the Resurrection Day will be, the falling of rain and how many drops are in it and its effects, what is in the wombs of mothers, the fate that awaits people, and how and when one will die.
