TEHRAN (IQNA) – The truth of everything is obvious and evident but some deny for various reasons, such as avoiding a threat to their personal or group interests.

Surah Ad-Dukhan

That is why many oppressors and tyrants throughout history tried to reject messengers of God to save their rule. God has warned there will be severe and certain punishment for them and this has been mentioned in several Surahs of Quran, including Surah Ad-Dukhan.

Ad-Dukhan is the name of the Quran’s 44th Surah, which has 59 verses and is in the 25th Juz. It is a Makki Surah and the 64th chapter of the Quran revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

Its name comes from a word in verse 10. This verse talks about a punishment called Dukhan for disbelievers and one of the signs of the Day of Judgment.

Dukhan means a gaseous thing which is like smoke and will cover all the sky ahead of the Resurrection Day.

According to Al-Mizan Exegesis of the Quran, the main purpose of this Surah is warning about punishment in this world and the next for disbelievers who deny the truthfulness of the Quran.

Surah Ad-Dukhan also refers to the Quran being sent down on the Night of Qadr to guide humanity.

It begins with underlining the greatness of the Quran and the fact that it was revealed on the Night of Qadr. Then it discusses Tawheed (monotheism) and some of the signs of God’s greatness in the world.

The Surah then highlights the fate of disbelievers and the kind of punishment they will receive on the Day of Judgment.

It reiterates that disbelievers will soon be surrounded by a severe punishment. Then they will return to their Creator and God will precisely assess their deeds and give them everlasting punishment.

The Surah also points to the story of Moses (AS) and the Bani Isra’il, their confrontation with pharaoh and their fate.

When Moses (AS) went to pharaoh to save the Bani Isra’il, pharaoh and his followers denied him and, therefore, they were punished by God and were drowned. This story aims to awaken those who deny the truth.

In addition to punishments in this world, Surah Ad-Dukhan talks about painful punishments awaiting disbelievers in hell. It underscores that the Resurrection Day will certainly come, whether they want it or not. Then it describes what will happen on that day and the kinds of punishments that disbelievers will receive as well as some of the rewards that will be given to believers.

The purpose of creation and the fact that heavens and earth have not been created in vain are among other subjects mentioned in this Surah.

Just as the way it began, Surah Ad-Dukhan concludes with reiterating the greatness of the Quran.
