An Egyptian court on Monday issued an injunction dissolving the Muslim Brotherhood and confiscating its assets, Al-Yawm Al-Sabi news website reported.
Mahmoud Abdullah, representative of the Al-Tajamu Party had sought the immediate action, accusing the Brotherhood of “terrorism” and of exploiting religion for political gain. The court ordered the Brotherhood’s assets to be held in trust until a final decision.
In reaction to the ruling that bans Muslim Brotherhood activities, the group’s legal committee regarded it as illegal.
Baha Abdul Rahman, member of the legal committee of the Freedom and Justice Party, the political wing of Muslim Brotherhood, said its lawyers would review the ruling and file an appeal.
Muhammad Ali Bashar, a senior Muslim brotherhood official, said the group still hopes for a political solution to the country’s crisis, stressing that security and military steps will get nowhere.
He said the administrative court in Cairo that issued the ruling against Muslim Brotherhood lacks jurisdiction and therefore its ruling cannot be implemented.
Muslim Brotherhood also issued a statement, saying that political reasons were behind the court’s decision, stressing that Muslim Brotherhood will continue to serve the Egyptian people even after it is dissolved.
Meanwhile a spokesman for the Tamarrod (rebellion) movement that had called on former president Mohamed Morsi to step down, welcomed the ruling and said it was a positive step on the path of the revolution.
Hussein Shahin said Muslim Brotherhood has proven to be an illegal and terrorist group and that all of the group’s assets must be consecrated.
