Public opinion researcher and member of the British Polling Council, ICM, conducted a survey for the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, which revealed that fewer than one in five voters think Britain should join the US in a strike on the Arab country.
The survey shows around 46 percent of Britons consider a second vote by British MPs over the issue of military intervention - if the result of a UN probe indicates that chemical weapons have indeed been used - as futile.
This comes as Washington is stepping up its efforts to rally support from its allies for a coordinated combined military attack against Syria.
The US has also deployed warships to the eastern Mediterranean despite strong opposition from American citizens against a military strike on Syria.
On August 28, hundreds of British protesters called for an end to the propaganda that claims Syrian government forces were behind the chemical attack, saying the situation is the same as before the Iraq war in 2003 when those beating the drums of war on Syria claimed Iraqi former dictator Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, which later proved to be a blatant lie.
