An international conference on religions is scheduled to be held in Brazil early next year.

Slated for February 20, the international event will be organized by the Muslim World League in cooperation with Brazil’s Union of Islamic Institutes, Baab website reported.

The municipality of Sao Paolo, the host city, will also cooperate in holding the international conference.

President of Brazil’s Union of Islamic Institutes Muhammad Hussein Al-Za’abi has recently visited the holy city of Makkah to discuss preparations for the conference with Secretary General of the Muslim World League Abdullah bin Abdul Mohsin Al-Turki.

The two also discussed further cooperation between the two institutions in areas like establishment of a World Arab Center in Sao Paolo and granting scholarship to top Brazilian Muslim students.

The first generation of Muslim emigrants travelled to Brazil in the first decade of the 20th century, although some say Brazil’s acquaintance with Islam started from the time Brazil was discovered by Portuguese sailors in the second half of the 15th century

According to the Brazilian census of 2010, there were over 35000 Muslims living in the country, primarily concentrated in the states of Sao Paulo and Parana.
