Farah, who is a Muslim, is currently Djibouti’s representative in the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), icilome.com website reports.
He has also served as a Djiboutian diplomat in Japan, China, India and several member countries of the Asean. He played an important role in the establishment of the first strategic studies center of Eastern Africa in Djibouti.
Farah is expected to be elected as new director general of UNESCO with support from member states of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation as well as African countries.
If elected, he will replace Bulgaria’s Irina Bokova and become the first Muslim director of the organization.
Representatives of Muslim countries in UNESCO believe that if Farah wins the race to be the next director-general of UNESCO, it will help to highlight the role of Muslims and the Islamic world in the organization.
